Basky’s vitamin D estimate exists for one emotional job: to make a short, capped bask feel like it mattered — without pretending the phone is a laboratory. The number is friendly. It is conservative. It is capped. It is not a diagnosis, not a prescription, and not a reason to skip sunscreen.
For the broader sunlight story, read vitamin D from sunlight. For how the minutes are sized first, see the safe sun timer and how Basky works.
What the estimate is
While you bask inside your personal window, Basky may show a climbing estimate framed as encouragement. The window itself comes from Fitzpatrick type plus live UV, aimed at about 60% of a minimal erythemal dose and clamped to roughly 5–90 minutes. The estimate lives inside that same philosophy: celebrate counted light, refuse to reward excess.
It is language for you stepped into daylight on purpose, not language for here is your bloodwork.
What the estimate is not
- Not a serum 25(OH)D result.
- Not medical dosing advice for supplements or prescriptions.
- Not a license to burn “for vitamin D.”
- Not a tanning metric or a color score.
- Not something Basky writes into Apple Health.
That last point matters. When you opt into Health sync, Basky may write Time in Daylight — a duration only. It never reads Health data. It never sends the vitamin D estimate into Health. Details: Apple Health daylight and Time in Daylight in Apple Health.
Why “friendly” and “conservative” in the same breath
People deserve warmth around outdoor habits. They also deserve guardrails. An uncapped “points for minutes” design quietly teaches over-exposure. Basky refuses that lesson. Crossing the safe line earns nothing toward the estimate, the daylight streak, or any reward.
Skin-type MED references Basky respects (J/m²): I 200, II 250, III 350, IV 450, V 600, VI 1000. Your window — and therefore the room the estimate has to move — follows that personalization. Illustration only: around UV 5, a mid-type window might land near ~29 minutes. Your sky and skin decide yours.
Clothing, shade, glass, and honesty
Fabric, hats, shade structures, and most ordinary window glass reduce UV reaching skin. Basky’s estimate assumes the exposure you choose to count. If you are under a porch roof or bundled up, treat the figure as mood lighting for the habit, not a precise nutrient ledger. Related: clothing and vitamin D.
Sunscreen still matters
Basky will never tell you to drop sunscreen so the estimate looks braver. The safe-sun window is a wellness framing for timing math, not a substitute for protection or a clinician. Use sunscreen, clothing, and shade whenever you need them. If you have a deficiency concern, photosensitive condition, or supplement question, ask a doctor — not an app screen.
Privacy and the free core
No account holds your estimate history in the cloud. No ads watch you bask. Location is optional and only feeds the UV lookup that sizes the window. The estimate feature sits in the free core forever. Basky Forever unlocks cosmetic skins only — never a subscription on nutrient-shaped encouragement.
Sunshine Circles do not share your estimate. Members see a first name and a simple sun-day signal. Glossary: sunshine circle meaning.
How to hold the number lightly
Glance at it if it helps you return tomorrow. Ignore it if numbers spike anxiety. On resting-UV days, use a daylight check-in instead of chasing a fake bask. The habit is outdoor light with a line — the estimate is optional poetry around that line.

Holding encouragement without false precision
Phones love decimals. Bodies do not run on app decimals. Basky’s estimate is deliberately framed as friendly and capped so it cannot become a shadow lab result. If a number makes you anxious, hide it from your attention and keep the timer ritual anyway — the habit does not require the garnish.
How it relates to the window
The safe-sun window is the governor. The estimate is a passenger. When the governor says stop, the passenger stops climbing meaningful credit. That coupling is the product ethics made visible. Without it, “vitamin D” language becomes an excuse engine.
What clinicians still own
Blood tests, deficiency diagnosis, pregnancy considerations, malabsorption, and supplement plans belong with clinicians. Basky will not interpret labs, recommend IU bottles, or tell you to abandon prescribed care because a pixel number looked sunny. If you are under medical guidance for vitamin D, follow that guidance.
Seasonal honesty
Winter at high latitudes can mean long stretches of resting UV. The estimate will not invent summer. Use check-ins, walks, and window-adjacent daylight for habit continuity, and keep expectations kind. Winter daylight habit and january daylight speak to that season.
Myths Basky will not feed
- “Burn a little for vitamin D.”
- “More minutes always means more estimate.”
- “Windows mean skip sunscreen.”
- “The number belongs in Apple Health as a medical metric.”
- “Deeper tan equals better vitamin D strategy.”
Those myths collide with Basky’s anti-shame, sunscreen-honest brief.
