Clothing is one of the oldest UV tools humans have. In Basky it plays two roles that must stay separate: protection in real life, and a dial on the vitamin D estimate. Only one of those roles touches the encouragement number. Neither role rewrites the safe-sun window.

That separation is the whole point of this page. If clothing lengthened the timer, people would undress to unlock minutes. Basky refuses that game.

The rule in one line

Safe window = UV × skin type (conservative formula). Vitamin D estimate = encouragement that can notice clothing.

If you remember nothing else, remember that clothing never buys more unprotected minutes on the Today screen.

How the safe window stays independent

Basky’s ceiling is still:

safeMinutes ≈ 0.40 × MED ÷ UVI, clamp 5–90.

MED comes from your Fitzpatrick type. UVI comes from today’s sky — see what the UV index means. Clothing is not a multiplier in that line. Long sleeves on a UV 5 / Type III day do not turn ~28–29 minutes into an hour. Details: how long can I stay in the sun. WHO bands (Low 0–2, Moderate 3–5, High 6–7, Very High 8+) still compress or expand the ceiling without asking your wardrobe.

What clothing does change

Basky’s vitamin D estimate is a friendly sketch of how a safe visit might relate to vitamin D encouragement. More bare skin in the estimate model can raise that sketch; more coverage can humble it. Either way:

  • It is not a dose
  • It is not a blood test
  • It is not a reason to pink up — see sunburn vs safe sun

Chase calm outdoor habits, not a higher number. Clinicians own deficiency treatment and supplement plans.

Clothing as protection (the non-negotiable part)

Hats, shirts, and shade reduce UV on covered areas. That is good. Pair clothing with sunscreen on exposed skin. A timer without covering or SPF is only half a plan — especially on high UV days.

Practical stack:

  1. Read UV and window.
  2. Dress for the day you want (comfort + coverage).
  3. Sunscreen what remains bare.
  4. End when the window ends.
  5. Glance at the D estimate only as optional color — never as a target to maximize.

Skin types and covering up

Type I may live in sleeves more often; Type VI may enjoy longer windows with similar outfits. Neither pattern changes Basky’s philosophy. No type is better. Melanin is not infinite armor; fair skin is not a flaw. Type pages from I to VI all keep clothing out of the window math.

Meds and sensitive skin

If photosensitizing medications or sensitive skin are part of your story, clothing and shade often matter even more — and a clinician should guide you. Basky cannot see your prescriptions. Wellness timing is not a diagnosis.

Why Basky separates the dials

Mixing more skin leads to more minutes with more skin leads to more estimated D would push people toward over-exposure. Basky splits the dials so the safe-sun timer stays a ceiling while the estimate stays soft encouragement. That split is how Basky works when fabric enters the chat.

A hoodie on a breezy day can be comfort, UV sense, and a humbler estimate all at once — none of those good things should trick you into thinking Basky secretly lengthened your safe-sun ceiling.

Keep the tone gentle (1): Basky is anti-shame about daylight and firm about damage. Use live UV, honor your Fitzpatrick answer, protect bare skin, and treat the window as a ceiling — safeMinutes ≈ 0.40 × MED ÷ UVI, clamped 5–90 — labeled as a conservative estimate, not a measurement.
