Sunburn and safe sun are not cousins with the same goal. One is injury. The other is a measured wellness visit. Basky’s entire personality sits on that line: warm about daylight, firm about damage, never impressed by pink skin.

Internet culture sometimes treats burn as proof you got sun. Basky refuses that framing — including anything adjacent to tanning-as-identity. Color change is not a quest line in this app.

What sunburn is (plainly)

Sunburn is your skin’s inflammatory response to too much ultraviolet — often showing up as redness, heat, tenderness, and later peeling. How fast that arrives depends on UV index, your Fitzpatrick type, reflection, altitude, meds, and more. Basky will never present a guaranteed burn-at-minute-n clock. Biology is not a stopwatch warranty.

If you burn badly, blister, feel unwell, or worry about your skin, that is clinician territory — not an app FAQ. Severe burns need medical care, not a longer timer next time.

What safe sun means in Basky

Safe sun is the Today-screen promise: about n minutes sized from live UV and your skin type, using:

safeMinutes ≈ 0.40 × MED ÷ UVI, clamp 5–90.

That is Basky’s ~60%-of-MED humility — a conservative estimate, not a measurement. The point is to leave the day before a burn dose is the plot. Details and tables live in how long can I stay in the sun. The familiar marketing illustration — UV 5 / Type III ≈ 28–29 minutes — is still a ceiling story, not a dare.

WHO bands still apply to the sky you walked into: Low 0–2, Moderate 3–5, High 6–7, Very High 8+. Higher bands shrink the wellness window for every type. See high UV: what to do.

Why reddening is never the goal

Pink edges mean leave the direct sun. I can push it is the opposite of Basky’s design. Streaks and check-ins celebrate showing up, not overdoing. I only got a little color is not Basky’s success metric.

Basky never rewards over. There is no bonus for ignoring the window. See how Basky works and the safe-sun timer.

Protection is not optional flavoring

A safe-sun window assumes you still use sunscreen on exposed skin — sunscreen and a sun timer; shade when minutes end — or sooner; clothing as everyday armor (note: clothing tunes the vitamin D estimate, not the safe window — clothing and vitamin D); and clinician guidance for photosensitizing medications, concerning moles, or sensitive skin.

Skipping protection to feel the sun harder is how safe sun collapses into sunburn.

Fair skin, deep skin, same rule

Type I windows are short; Type VI windows are longer. Neither type is supposed to chase burn. Melanin is not infinite armor; fair skin is not a moral failure. The anti-shame rule is universal: stop before injury, regardless of type. Type guides from I through VI all end on that note.

Vitamin D is not a burn excuse

Basky’s vitamin D estimate is a friendly nudge capped with the same safe-dose idea. It is not a prescribed dose and not a reason to stay until you color. If you need medical dosing advice, that is a clinician conversation.

A calmer definition of success

Success is leaving on time. Success is tapping daylight on a cloudy day when UV is resting. Success is choosing shade at high UV without treating it like defeat. Success is updating Settings when your beach-day answer changes — not proving toughness outdoors.

Sunburn says the dose was too high. Safe sun says the visit was enough. If you are already pink, the wellness experiment is over for now — hydrate, get out of direct sun, and let tomorrow’s window be shorter and kinder.

Keep the tone gentle (1): Basky is anti-shame about daylight and firm about damage. Use live UV, honor your Fitzpatrick answer, protect bare skin, and treat the window as a ceiling — safeMinutes ≈ 0.40 × MED ÷ UVI, clamped 5–90 — labeled as a conservative estimate, not a measurement.
